Communicate in the office electronically. Important notices or memos can be emailed or posted on an updatable document on the intranet.


Edit documents on-screen to reduce the number of drafts printed


Double side copies to cut paper generation in half


Make only exact number of copies needed. It is not necessary to make extras “just in case”


Use half page cover sheets and/or stick-on fax transmissions labels, or if possible do not use a cover sheet (this will also save on phone costs)


Before printing, always use the spell check and print preview


Edit and add comments to documents on the computer instead of by hand or a hard copy


Adjust margins and font size


Use line spacing of no more than 1.5 and single space whenever possible


Use “make fit” option to reduce font size and change margins automatically for non-letterhead documents


Order and utilize reusable envelopes for interoffice mail


Decrease the number of seasonal greeting cards as much as possible – try e-cards


Eliminate unnecessary magazines subscriptions – remove your name from unwanted mailings – Subscribe for digital copy of magazines.


Research in the library and on-line as opposed to ordering written publications


At hotel stays during business travels use electronic check-out if available


If hotel provides complimentary newspapers pass them on to someone else or leave in lobby for other readers



Reduce the amount of water used when washing hands and doing wudu


Use the half flush option for toilets


Ensure taps are turned off. If you spot a leaking tap, tell building maintenance staff


At hotel stays during business travel inform house keeping sheets and towels do not need to be replaced everyday.



Turn off lights and office machines like computers printers, photocopiers and other electronic equipment when not needed instead of leaving them on stand by , not just after hours (during lunch, meetings – any time away for a significant period of time)


Turn off air conditioner when not in use


Unplug cell phones and laptop when they finish charging. Unplug battery chargers or power adapters not in use.


Turn off your monitor when not used – a screen saver is not a power saver.



Use a glass cup/bottle instead of disposable plastic cups


Don’t take a plastic bag from the cafeteria or return it after use



Company bus


Avoid idling( turn off car engine when stuck in crowded streets for more than (15 seconds)



Take leftovers home or give them to someone
